Teach Her These Things

September 2 2017 , Written by Ofem Ubi Published on #poetry, #BlackPower, #Lecture

Teach her these things
Teach her about her body
Tell her it's highest of all things sacred
And it's not funny the way she displays it like a commodity in the market
Tell her it's no deal for the highest bidder or bonanza for a lucky winner
It's a price for a diligent racer
Tell her it's no boy's property to claim
Neither her dad's or uncle's right to reclaim
Teach her to keep it away from the media's eye
And tell her no part of it is for giveaway
Reasons why her boss or lecturer should stay blind to it
Tell her that this message might be different from what society tells her
But also tell her that wisdom is a silent voice in a crowd of foolish noise
Tell her there's a thick line between nakedness and boldness and there's no matrimony between both
For boldness entails courage
But nakedness is vulnerability
It says"Here I am, this is the last of me, there's nothing beyond what you see "
And showing hers to the world just proves how weak and insecure she is
Tell her that being unclad doesn't make her bold
Else they'll be no need for bathrooms
Being unclad doesn't make you bold
Else they'll be no need for clothes
And we would all rock our skins freely in the wild
It's a shame meant to be covered and protected
Not a billboard for public view
Teach her these things
