Till Death Do Us Part

January 18 2018 , Written by Ofem Ubi Published on #poetry

Nkechi still lives up to her vow

For her death isn’t just a body laid in state

It means demise with no trace

Days and days she would stare at their portrait on the wall

Hoping they could lock hands again just like two days ago

She would still feel his hands ruffle across her natural hair

Reminisce of cold nights where he was her micro wave

She would still wear the ring on her finger

Stare at the door expecting to welcome his smile as always

But these days are colder, stranger and different

Nkechi is still married

Atleast so she thinks

So she holds his bones all day and loops her vows

She stares at his ghost and dances with it

From dusk till dawn

For her death is not just a body laid in state

It means demise with no trace

And if she still holds memories of him

Then he’s not dead yet, then she’s still married

Happily, virtually

For her, he’s not dead yet

He’s only playing hide and seek with her emotions

So ‘Till Death Do Us Part’

Till amnesia visits

She’ll be here
