BARE(embrace the flaws)

May 2 2017 , Written by Ofem Ubi Published on #poetry, #BlackPower, #Bare

Lights… Camera… Action…

As I reverse from truth into fiction

Trying to fit into the role society scripted for me

It’s just exhausting rehearsing lines my tongue is foreign to

For I’ve lost my identity trying to re-create myself

Misplaced the sound trying to re-echo myself

They say it’s easy to renovate myself

But this is war between me, I and myself

My soul is on the verge of relocating

For this new body case is irritating

So go tell the media

Tell them they could keep their costumes

I am ok with these rags that fit me

They could keep their scripts

For I am fine with these lines that guide me

Tell them those shoes are too high for me to fit in

And the gloss is too gross for me to hide my lips in

Tell them I stumbled upon true beauty in the eatery

And I asked her to dine with me

She fed me with lessons that overwhelmed me

Told me that she is light yet heavy

Paper weight because there’s no cost in being her

But expensive because most of us can’t afford her

Being somebody else is a cross I wouldn’t want to carry

Because Golgotha will be just too far I’ll never see Calvary

Tell them I looked into the mirror

But couldn’t find myself

All I saw was a blank reflection because truly I have lost myself

I won’t try to cover my blemish

And there’s no need striving to make my lips look pinkish

For we were all made in different shades

Be it brown, charcoal or chocolate

I’d love to return to return to the old me

Me and my flaws that embrace me

Not some list of expectations that check me

Bare as I can be
